How To Get Candid Online
At the core of every business is a person who was once scared to put themselves out there.
Maybe they are still afraid.
Because sharing yourself online has been transformed into a convoluted process of multiple selves. Do you share the real you? Parts of you? An entirely different persona?
The answer?
Share the easiest version.
And by virtue of easy, I mean the most truthful. Because pretending to be someone or something else takes more time, energy and money that we don’t really have anymore.
People want to do business with people who are human. The people they can relate to. Humans remember stories rather than products and ideas. We want to attach meaning and stories to experiences so we can share them with our own circles and start new conversations.
Here are five ways to get more candid online:
Ask yourself this question - “How do people feel when I walk into a room?”. We forget that to be truthful online, we need to share the closest version of an in-person experience we can. If your presence brings warmth, positivity and optimism into a room, how can you share that same feeling online? Put yourself in the reader’s shoes.
Start with the message - what do you want people to walk away with after reading your content? If you want people to feel inspired and motivated, then you will shape your language and imagery in a way that evokes that emotion. If you want them to walk away with action steps, how can you make it easy for them to take that step? Is it a tool or a resource you have found useful in your own life and business?
Ask yourself WHY - what’s the reason behind why you do what you do. Share your core passion of what drove you to start your business or put your idea into the world. The most compelling information for people is justification behind a product or service. We want to know how this has come to be.
Tell but don’t sell. There is nothing more cringe worthy than a sell for the sake of selling. You haven’t built any rapport yet! Tell a story or an anecdote that inspires conversation. You wouldn’t show up in a group of product and say ‘hey, buy my product/service’. You would try to connect with them first to understand who they are.
Choose 3 goals for your content. What do you want to get out of communicating online? These can be goals which also translate into content pillars. You might have a goal to become a prominent authority on finance on LinkedIn. Therefore one of your content pillars might be Finance Education where you specifically share content that achieves this.
I want to challenge business owners worldwide to get candid with their audience and share a version of themselves they might have been hiding. After all, the most engaging brands are those that choose to get personal.
